Trusting God's Unfamiliar Paths
Consider the miraculous crossing of the Red Sea—a pivotal moment in Israel's history. When the Israelites found themselves trapped between the sea and Pharaoh's advancing army, God instructed Moses to stretch out his staff, parting the waters and providing a dry path for His people (Exodus 14:21-22). Similarly, when the Israelites crossed the Jordan River into the Promised Land, the priests carrying the Ark of the Covenant stepped into the river, causing it to stop flowing and allowing the people to cross on dry ground (Joshua 3:15-17).
In both instances, God demonstrated His power and faithfulness in remarkable ways, using ordinary objects and individuals to accomplish His extraordinary purposes. Yet, there is a danger in becoming too reliant on specific methods or expecting God to work only within our preconceived notions.
When Pharaoh pursued the Israelites at the Red Sea, God intervened by positioning Himself between His people and their enemies, appearing as a pillar of cloud by day and a pillar of fire by night (Exodus 14:19-20). This divine protection shielded the Israelites from harm and ensured their safe passage to freedom. Had they allowed fear to cloud their judgment or insisted on a familiar method of deliverance, they may have missed God's miraculous intervention on their behalf.
Similarly, if Joshua had insisted on using Moses' staff to cross a body of water instead of trusting in God's leading, he would have limited the scope of God's power and provision in his life.
In the New Testament, Jesus exemplifies the importance of trusting in God's guidance and sovereignty, even when His methods seem unfamiliar. In John 3:8, Jesus declares, "The wind blows where it wishes, and you hear its sound, but you do not know where it comes from or where it goes. So it is with everyone who is born of the Spirit." Here, Jesus emphasizes the unpredictable nature of God's work in our lives, urging us to surrender to His leading and trust in His divine wisdom.
It's crucial to recognize that while God may speak to us through dreams or visions, His communication is not limited to these means alone. He can also speak through His word—the Scriptures, through the counsel of others, or even through our own thoughts and reflections. Restricting God to one mode of communication limits our understanding of His vast and multifaceted nature.
